How to Plan Your Quilt Layout
Start with the finished quilt size, then subtract borders and sashing to find the space available for blocks. Divide that space by your block size to get the number of columns and rows. The calculator handles all of this math automatically.
Common block sizes are 6", 8", 10", and 12" finished. Larger blocks mean fewer blocks to piece, but smaller blocks give more design flexibility. Beginners often start with 10" or 12" blocks.
Fabric Estimation Notes
Block fabric assumes each block uses one cut of fabric plus 1/2" seam allowance on all sides. Sashing is calculated as strips between all blocks and rows. Border fabric is calculated as strips around the perimeter. Backing adds 4" to each side for quilting margin. Binding is calculated as 2.5" strips for double-fold binding.
FAQ
How much extra fabric should I buy?
Buy at least 1/4 yard extra per fabric. For multiple fabrics, buy 10-15% extra to account for cutting waste, squaring up, and mistakes. Fabric from the same bolt ensures consistent color.
What about quilt batting?
Batting should be the same size as your backing (4" larger than the quilt top on all sides). Common batting sizes: crib 45"x60", twin 72"x90", full 81"x96", queen 90"x108", king 120"x120".
How do I calculate for sashing with cornerstones?
Cornerstones sit at sashing intersections. You need (columns-1) x (rows-1) cornerstones. Cut them the same width as your sashing strips. The calculator includes sashing fabric in its estimate.
