How Much Yarn Do I Need?
Yarn requirements depend on three factors: project type, yarn weight, and project size. A chunky blanket needs far more yardage than a fingering-weight hat. Our calculator uses industry-standard estimates based on published patterns and yarn manufacturer data.
Always buy 10-15% more yarn than calculated to account for gauge differences, mistakes, and joining new skeins. Buy all skeins from the same dye lot to avoid color variations.

FAQ
Should I buy extra yarn?
Yes. Always buy at least one extra skein. If you're substituting yarn weights or your gauge is different from the pattern, you may need even more. Most yarn shops allow returns of unused skeins within 60 days.
Does crochet use more yarn than knitting?
Generally yes. Crochet typically uses 25-30% more yarn than knitting for the same project size because crochet stitches are thicker. Our calculator accounts for this difference.
What if my yarn has different yardage per skein?
Check the ball band for yards per skein. Divide our total yardage result by your skein's yardage to get the number of skeins. Round up to the nearest whole number.
