Hat Sizes by Age

Head circumference varies, but these standard sizes work for most people. When in doubt, measure the actual head — wrap a tape measure around the forehead, just above the ears and eyebrows.

Understanding Negative Ease

Hats need negative ease — meaning the hat circumference is smaller than the head circumference. Without it, the hat slides down over your eyes.

For most beanies, subtract 1 inch from the head measurement. For a slouchy hat, use 0 to 0.5 inches of negative ease. For a very snug headband-style fit, subtract 1.5-2 inches.

The yarn fiber matters here. Cotton and linen have no memory and stretch out over time — use more negative ease (1.5-2 inches). Wool springs back and holds shape — standard 1 inch of ease works.

Crown Decreases

The crown is where you shape the top of the hat. The standard approach divides stitches into 6-8 equal sections and decreases one stitch per section every other round until 6-8 stitches remain.

For a rounded crown (classic beanie), use 8 sections. For a slightly pointed top, use 6 sections. Start crown decreases when the hat reaches about 70% of the total height.

FAQ

How much yarn do I need for a hat?

An adult hat in worsted weight takes 150-200 yards. A baby hat needs about 80-100 yards. Bulky yarn hats use less yardage but cost more per skein. Use the yarn yardage calculator for exact estimates.

Should I knit a gauge swatch for a hat?

Yes — especially if you're using the standard gauge from our calculator rather than your own. A hat is small enough that even half a stitch per inch changes the circumference by 1-2 inches. Swatch in the round if you plan to knit the hat in the round.

What needles do I need for a hat?

16-inch circular needles for the body, plus DPNs or a longer circular for magic loop when the stitches get too few for the 16-inch needle. Switch methods when you have about 60 stitches remaining on the crown.
